The achilles heel of the VQ's oil pump is the stock oil pump gear design. Boundary started with a blank sheet using a design that comes straight from Boundary skunkworks. The new design eliminated the asymmetric tooth profile that puts a huge amount of stress in the root of the teeth. Then we added in a formulation of metal and heat treatment that has been race proven in Boundry oil pumps for nearly 2 decades. The result? A gear that doesn't break, what more can you ask for?
Boundary oil pump gears for the VQ35HR and VQ37VHR are machined in matched sets, and shipped with blueprinting paperwork. Our gears have been proven in applications of up to 1500 horsepower in this application, and red-lines exceeding 9000 RPM.
Our gears are cut from special heat treated chromoly billets, that has been verified by nearly 2 decades of racing. We have found these gears to be nearly indestructible in all applications. Unlike others selling oil pump gears on the side, this is our one and only specialty and we take pride in the fact no one has ever broken a set of our gears.
Why are OEM gears so weak?
There is no comparison between billet steel used by Boundary and powdered steel used in OEM oil pumps. OEM oil pumps use a "cost efficient technique" called sintering because its cheap and produces tighter tolerances then casting. However powdered steel is even weaker then castings at only about 6000 PSI of strength. Good billet steels like the one that Boundary uses approach 110,000 PSI in yield strength or around 18 times stronger then OEM sintered steel.
Gears Designed for Extreme Applications
We use advanced FEA simulations to break down each oil pump for weaknesses. We test the pumps against the worst case scenarios: debris impacts, vibration, and offside loads. Then we rebuild the part over and over again until the gear is as strong as we can make it. Our gears have survived 1/4 in and larger debris impacts. Our gears have survived the number 1 crank cap coming apart and the pump housing splitting in half. The gears themselves though? Those were loaded into another housing and away the assembly went to race day.

Because the oil pump housing and the internal components of the pump (spring and pressure relief) are subject to fatigue and wear reusing a used housing is NOT recommended. To ensure long life span and durability it is recommended to purchase and upgrade a new OEM pump (found HERE). This does not mean a used housing cannot be upgraded, but you must keep in mind that more than the gears in the oil pump are suceptible to wear. Boundary engineers talk about upgrading pumps HERE.
