Product Description
Due to the saddle bag design of the stock fuel tank, the 350Z (and more notably, the 370Z as well as the Infiniti G35 and G37) is commonly known to stall due to fuel starvation when making long sweeping right-hand turns at speed with as much as 3/4 tank of gasoline on R-compound tires. During a right-hand turn, fuel is thrown away from the OEM fuel pump and becomes trapped in the left-hand sump of the fuel tank. The fuel cannot be transferred to the right-hand sump fast enough and the engine stalls.
The Z1 Motorsports Fuel Anti-Starvation Kit solves this issue by utilizing a secondary fuel pump which transfers fuel from the left-hand sump of the fuel tank directly into the OEM fuel pump basket. Thoroughly track tested at Road Atlanta, this kit eliminates the fuel starvation problem on a clockwise track particularly prone to cause fuel starvation problems on later model Nissan Z models.
Utilizing the latest patented innovation from Holley Performance Products, their fuel HydraMat has been developed to:
- Fuel reservoir system designed to reduce fuel starvation issues present in hard cornering, acceleration, stopping, inclines, and low fuel conditions
- Patent pending design that solves the problems associated with traditional fuel pick-ups in stock fuel tanks as well as racing fuel cells
- Greatly reduces the potential for air to enter into the fuel system which can result in poor engine performance and/or engine stalling

- Surface tension and fluid wicking allow the HydraMat™ to continue to draw fuel from the tank or cell even when part of the mat is uncovered
- As an area of the HydraMat™ is uncovered, tiny pores in the media seal off through surface tension, forcing fuel to be drawn from other areas of the mat where fuel continues to be available
- Unique internal reservoir assists in keeping fuel available at the pickup even under extreme fuel slosh conditions

Hi Z1, I am exploring some options to correct the lateral G fuel starvation issue in my TT 350Z.
With regard to this product, I am wondering where you are getting power from for the in-tank fuel pump you are using. Are you using a relay, or is it always on?
What brand of pump comes with the kit (Holley, as well?) and is it low pressure?

On NA cars we use power in parallel from the in tank pump. If you are running a boosted car with higher demands for current (upgraded pump or return system with higher pressure) we would advise setting up a dedicated source voltage on it's own relay. You can still trigger the relay from the pump but for the wires sake it will be best to get an additional circuit to support the work load.

How hard is this to install? And do you recommend upgrading the fuel pump when installing this?
This kit takes a few hours to install cleanly. We would recommend picking up a new pair of tank bulkhead o rings to replace while you are in there. Available here.

The kit does what is says its supposed to do, but works a little too well and is now causing me more problems than I originally had. I installed the kit then hit a CCW config track (where this kit would be less useful due to more left turns), and my fuel gauge started reading empty when I knew I had plenty of fuel. My fuel reading would drop in and out throughout the day. I opened up my tank the next morning to find that all my fuel was on the passenger side of my car while the driver's side was bone dry empty. Cool, the pump did its job, but that messes up the fuel reading. if the driver side lever arm senses 0 fuel in the tank, the computer freaks out and will tell you the tank is empty regardless of what the passenger side is reading. I called Z1 about this issue and their answer to me was to "something about a relay and to look up solutions on the forums". Well I spent the day doing that and found no solutions other than switching to the RRP surge tank or whatever it is. SpecialtyZ (which was more helpful than Z1) told me that they often instal a spal relay kit on the starvation pump that has to run all the way to the front of the car and wire in the ECU i think? This is far more complicated than I was willing to go for this kit to work properly. Either this relay kit should have been included in the starvation kit, or the kit's product page should have mentioned something about this. So 2 stars for it working but causing more problems.
Hopefully when I run a CW layout, my fuel reading won't go out as much.

Have to be extremely careful with line routing, works great but has interfered with my tank float and can't trust my fuel guage.

It definitely solves the problem of fuel starvation and will get every drop of gas from your tank. I highly recommend it.
The pump that came with my kit would not retain the plastic inlet fitting sufficiently to use - it would pop off at nothing.
Sadly there was no offer for any relief when dealing with customer service. It was necessary to buy a replacement pump - it was not the same design as the bad pump and it worked perfectly.
So the project cost me more than I wanted but the job is done. Next!

The system appears to work, so I must have installed it correctly, however the instructions are very general and vague. They don't address the siphon tube that sits exactly where the hydramat is supposed to be located. Some guidance there would be nice. I do have concerns about pump failure due to running dry. Time will tell.

As a solution to a problem, I give this a 5-star rating. The Z does starve itself of fuel on long, high-g, right-hand turns, even with the tank at 3/4 full. This solution works as advertised, delivering fuel from the left side of the "saddlebag" tank directly into the primary fuel pump basket, instead of letting it try to suck fuel from the small cross-over tube at the bottom of the tank. Several track days and spirited drives have proven its durability. The secondary fuel pump is somewhat noisy (it makes a humming sound that is more noticeable when not submerged at low tank levels), but solving fuel starvation is worth it.
Installation is somewhat difficult. Visibility through the tank openings is poor. It was challenging to decide how to place and direct the new pump harness and output hose across the tank so it did not interfere with the level sensor float. There was not much guidance in the instructions. The fuel sock is a Holley product, and likely "universal". It is slightly too big to lay flat across the bottom of the Z fuel tank. The stiff fuel hose is also difficult to work with.
The reason this gets 4 stars is because of the low-quality connection of the input hose to the fuel pump. Everything is plastic except for a tiny retaining clip, rather than being screwed in place. If it is moved around too much during installation (hard to avoid with the stiff fuel hose), the clip will gouge the plastic post it sits on and fall off. I ended up losing mine inside the fuel tank and having to search for it with a magnet. I contacted Z1 about the issue, and they did offer to send a replacement retaining clip. Ultimately, I ended up zip-tying the input connector onto the fuel pump to keep it in place. If this were not done, I would be concerned that fuel sloshing around would pull it apart over time. Other than this aspect of the fuel pump design, it is a good product.

I installed this kit just before our last track event of 2020, I have to admit it wasn’t the easiest thing I’ve installed in n my Z, as for performance this kit was well worth it, I started the day with 5 gallons of fuel and kept it at 5 gallons each session, ran total 8 sessions at Sonoma Raceway, three hard right turns and never had a single starvation issue, definitely worth having, A+

There is nothing quite like the pucker you get when roaring out of turn 11 at Road Atlanta sweeping through turn 12 at over 100mph onto the front straight and your engine die from fuel starvation. Gone are the days of making sure I have over 3/4th of a tank to keep everything running on the hard right hand sweepers. It took around 2 hours to install this kit in our 2013 370z track car and now I can push the tank level to almost empty before needing to refuel. The build quality of this kit is exactly what you would expect from a top tier company like Z1 Motorsports. All of the hardware fits as it should and the instructions are top notch. I would recommend this to anyone that is running R compound tires on a 370z for track use.

This kit works. Period. Installation is a little tricky in that you must keep the fuel line away from the fuel level arm on the passenger side. Just route the line behind the hard line in the tank. It took us three tries to get it right. I have run the tank down to 1/8th while pulling over one g in a banked right hander (the light bulb at Lightning NJMP).

i loving tracking my 350z an was sick of filling up every time i came of track. anything under 3/4 tank it would hit fuel starvation. gets old really fast. so i picked up this kit. it went in easy shocking how easy it was to install. well i just got done from racing over the weekend happy to say i can easily run the car down to the gas light.

Put this kit in my car before my last trackday and started the session with 1/4 tank, ran almost the entire session with the gas light on and then put 16.5 gallons in it. I used to have to begin a session with min 3/4 tank to avoid fuel starve. Most I have ever put in my car once the light came on was 17 gallons. Well worth it to me!
