The Z1 Baffled Catch Can Kit filters oil and other particulates from the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system on Infiniti Q50 and Q60 models equipped with the 3.0t VR30 powertrain.

Blow-by is a phenomenon that is normal to some degree in any internal combustion engine. Combustion gasses leak past the piston rings into the crankcase, creating excess crankcase pressure. The PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system removes these excess gasses by using intake vacuum to draw them back into the intake where they are consumed, but not without catching oil mist in the process. On turbocharged engines, higher levels of blow-by caused by the increased cylinder pressure creates additional pressure in the crankcase, resulting in higher levels of oil and contaminants being drawn into the intake system and coating the insides of the intake and valves.

Inside of the driver-side valve cover, Nissan uses an air/oil separator to prevent oil from being recirculated into the intake through the PCV system. This system has proven to be ineffective in preventing oil from entering the intake, adding to the need for an oil catch can. On the VR30 engine, Nissan elected to use a direct injection fuel system. This means that fuel is injected directly into the combustion chamber rather than the intake system like the outgoing VQ series engines that use a type of port injection. On port injection engines, fuel is injected into the intake where it would also clean oil and carbon buildup on the intake valves as it enters the combustion chamber. Since VR30's use a direct injection fuel system, intake valves don't benefit from the cleaning effect of the fuel and can experience high amounts of oil and carbon buildup. Engines with an excessive amount of carbon build-up on the intake valves can suffer from a loss of power as airflow over the valve is restricted.  Additionally, this build-up can interfere with the valve seat and prevent the valve from sealing causing larger issues.

The Z1 Oil Catch Can Kit is installed in line with the vehicle's factory PCV system. The catch can uses a steel mesh screen to filter oil and other particulates, trapping them in the catch can while recirculating gasses back through the intake. Removing oil particulates allows the vehicle's PCV system to work more efficiently, removing excess crankcase pressure and keeping your intake system cleaner. While other catch-can systems use universal lines and brackets, the Z1 kit includes vehicle-specific brackets and formed silicone hoses, guaranteeing a precise fit and simple installation.
