In a cylinder head application, washers serve as a bearing surface to prevent a high tensile load fastener from sinking into the clamping surface, which has been shown in many cases using the Standard ARP Washer. They also function as a means of increasing the accuracy of torque readings. Z1 Motorsports Custom Washers are parallel ground for flatness from premium chromoly, then hardened and finished in black oxide. Superior to the OEM stamped washers, the standard ARP head stud kit comes with a smaller diameter washer than Z1 Motorsport’s Custom ARP Washers. The contrast here is apparent when measuring surface area, where the Z1 Washers are 5% larger than OEM and 70% larger than the standard washers included in the ARP kit. Using the same ARP head stud kit and same installation procedure in addition to proper application of ARP’s proprietary lubrication, Z1’s larger washer helps more uniformly distribute the clamp load that the head bolt / stud carries.
